Access to Feminine Hygiene Products

How accessible are feminine hygiene products?

Less than 20% of women and girls in India have access to or use menstrual products. This is a shocking statistic since having the means to take care of your body is a necessity.

In rural India, 90% of women and girls use old unsanitary clothing instead of a pad. Because they struggle with access to pads, many menstruators in rural areas have to rely on unsanitary alternatives that are harmful to their bodies.

Additionally, 93 million adolescent girls in India are in need of menstrual products. Lack of access for adolescents is a significant issue since it has many consequences such as school absenteeism which prevents girls from focusing on their studies.

Despite significant progress, challenges persist. Access to menstrual hygiene products is still limited in remote areas, and affordability is still an issue for many. The stigma around menstruation in rural areas also creates an additional barrier that perpetuates stereotypes and taboos.

Pad Pals works towards improving menstrual product access to ensure that women and girls have the means to take care of their bodies properly.
